The Now of Wafel http://www.wafel.net The doodles of a software architect. Because it's still a strange world we live in... Wafel's World! posterous.com Wed, 10 Nov 2010 01:58:00 -0800 To ask a question http://www.wafel.net/to-ask-a-question http://www.wafel.net/to-ask-a-question

Asking questions to me is a mysterious art, impossible to ever get a full grasp on. A single well-placed question van change a life; it can solve misunderstandings or break down stereotypes that a have lingered around for years and create or bridge gaps between people. It can even instill both shame or bliss. Social consequences of asking questions can be immense: parliamentary hearings, scientific research, psychological treatments, philosophical debate.. they all depend on asking the right questions.

For me, the power of asking questions is beyond doubt. Yet many times in life, we choose to say instead of ask. Somewhere along the way, asking something became the same as saying "I don't know": A sign of weakness. While in reality, a good question can be the ultimate proof of intelligence. Big advice to anyone, including myself: ask more!

Don't you agree?

A while ago I came across a beatifully simple, elegant and completely useless concept: A more-or-less-social site where people list what they would do for $5. Other people can then order these services. The beauty of course, is that $5 is a magic amount that makes most people willing to do a little thing, and yet is small enough to be spent without too much thinking. It's easily spent, just for laughs.

Inevitably, the place becomes hilareous:

Slapstick capitalism FTW!

Today are municipal elections in the Netherlands and I live in one of the only two cities in which the extreme-right party PVV (by Geert Wilders) is participating. With all eyes on those two cities, there's been a media frenzy in my neighbourhood for weeks now.

I thought I would manage to stay clear, but a local newspaper caught up ;-) (link is Dutch)

Speeding up the earth's rotation and thus permanently shortening our days by about 1.26 microseconds. This all after the major 2004 eathquake that shortened our days by 6.8 microseconds. That proves it:

Mon, 01 Mar 2010 03:54:17 -0800 A single man - Gay emancipation in Dutch Catholic churches http://www.wafel.net/a-single-man-gay-emancipation-in-dutch-cathol http://www.wafel.net/a-single-man-gay-emancipation-in-dutch-cathol

During carnaval in the Netherlands a local "Prince Carnaval" was refused to do communion in church. In response, local gay rights movements attended mass this weekend to see if they were also refused. They were. This was cause for columnist Désanne van Brederode to make the following empassioned call which I (loosely) translated here in English:

The movie 'A single man', which is currently in cinemas, shows a professor in English, who mourns is lost beloved. His pain is pictured effectively by fashion designer and director Tom Ford - someone who has equal interests for both exterior and dressing, as the depths of the inner world. Seldom have I seen desire, loss and swallowed desperation depicted so subtly. A serene, venerable ode to love, and the perfect antidote to the egocentric, exhibitionist 'emotion-porn' that floods us daily. The lost love of the literature professor, is a man. It's halfway last century, Homosexuality is not accepted. To his students, the profession explains that there are minorities that instill fear in people. Shyfully he speaks of "we, the invisible", thats all. Moments, equally wry as those in which his beloved is missed. This morning dozens of gays went to the high mass in the Sint Janskathedraal in Den Bosch, to see if bishop Huurkmans would refuse them the communion. A fierce reaction to the priest from Reusel that recently refused the gay Prince Carnaval. A justified response. It is up to no one, including priests, to decide who sins and who does not - that's up for Jesus Crist to decide. A decent heterosexual marriage, a homely family, what does that says about someones inside? And yet: practicing gays slur the sacrament only bu looking at it! You only have to think about the Irish molestation scandals by priests, and you will know what Jesus meant by the speck of sawdust in the eye of the other and the plank in your own eye. Often, I hear people say: "Actually Islam needs a reformer like Martin Luther." I agree, but Christianity also still needs Martin Luthers. Give the right example! It would be nice if Christians would bring their devoted frontbearers and their judging fellow-believers to the movie A Single Man. Those who stay unaffected and cold by that movie, just because it deals with gay love, should consider if there is place in a petrified heart like that for communion or for God. And not the other way around.

Mon, 01 Mar 2010 02:53:30 -0800 When will the food remains hit the mechanic airflow manipulator?! http://www.wafel.net/when-will-the-food-remains-hit-the-mechanic-a http://www.wafel.net/when-will-the-food-remains-hit-the-mechanic-a

If you're in project management, you probably have a good gut feeling that tells you whether to buy champaign or headache medicin whenever you get a new project. This is of course a combination of experience, social/political factors etcetera.

This makes me extremely skeptical of initiatives like the one below. Especially the assumption that project management and project risk management are based on metrics is flawed. It's all based on soft human factors. How is the political climate? Do the stakeholders know what they want? Are you going to be able to be in the drivers seat or do you have to be passive?

Non the less, all this experiental factors are not measurable, and thus you can't defend them based on evidence. That's why it's vital that we do try to get to reasonable metrics.

A great way, in my opinion, would be to get a huge set of possible metrics, and then apply them to historical projects. See how the metrics would have looked during those projects. Then map that against the project outcomes and find out which real key variables made the difference. I'm willing to bet that the results are not what we might expect, Freakonomics style.

This paper is an interesting thought experiment, but not very useful in reality.

Sat, 27 Feb 2010 07:33:27 -0800 Hi, I'm a non-US customer... please hand over the goods http://www.wafel.net/hi-im-a-non-us-customer-please-hand-over-the http://www.wafel.net/hi-im-a-non-us-customer-please-hand-over-the Many great services and products are only available "for consumers in the US". I think this stinks. National boundaries have no place anymore in global commerce, so here's a quick guide to creating an online US identity. Non of this is illegal, but please behave.

A US IP address
The most common restrictions are based on your IP address. To avoid this, simply get a US-based one. The nicest way to get one of those is by using a VPN or proxy. I use VyprVPN but you can also check lists of (accidentally) open proxy servers, like this one. That should settle the IP part, my IP location is in Carson City, Nevada.. just in case you're interested ;-)

A US postal address
Ordering packages usually involves sending items to a delivery address, which often has to be in the US, or if they do ship to Europe, it's going to be extremely expensive. That's why getting a forwarding address in the US will help. These guys offer them for fair prices (a $10 setup fee). You then only pay the US->EU shipping fees.

A US phone number
Last part of the puzzle is to have a US phone number, this is where Skype comes into play. SkypeIn has numbers starting at $18.

And that should just about do it :-)
